Determine Offset in Frames or Seconds

When in iMovie:

  • It is best to have the Detached audio from the video and the HW .wav file showing.

  • Zoom the time scale as large as possible.

  • Align the start of the audio files.

  • Go to the end and use keystroke 'M' to mark the same point in the audio tracks. (The example uses the start of the last note played.)

  • At this point you can use iMovie to adjust the timing of the video frame to match the audio in HW. See

  • To edit the Audio in Audacity, use either of the following methods to determine the number of frames offset between the marks

  1. Use the right and left arrow keys on your keyboard to move the playhead one frame forward or backward. Count the number of frames between the 2 marks.

  2. Select part of a clip between the markers by holding down the 'R' key and dragging.

  • A white box will indicate the number of seconds:frames in the selection.

  • Determine the frame rate. Create the Selection Box as in option 2 above. Widen it until it clicks over to a second. If the number of frames indicates 29 then goes to 0, the frame rate is 30 fps. If the frame count goes from 59 to 0, the frame rate is 60 fps.

Compute the offset in seconds:

Offset = (# of frames)/fps seconds

Add (HW occurs before Video audio) or Subtract (Video audio occurs before HW) this offset to/from the total length in Audacity. See
